  • Day 1

    Burgundy Wine & Culture Tour, Day 1: Auxerre-Chablis

    Depart Paris for your drive Auxerre, with its winding cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. Perched on the River Yonne, Auxerre has a relaxed atmosphere-perfect for dining and wandering. Stop into the beautifully restored Cathedral St. Etienne while here. Continue on to Chablis, the charming village that is synonymous with the famous dry, honey-scented white wine.

    Explore the wine roads that wind into the hills covered with vines. Monks from the Pontigny Abbey were the first to plant these famous Chardonnay grapes here along the River Serein. The Chablis wines fall into four appellations: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Premier Cru and Grand Cru- discover them here! Explore the wine domains and specialty boutiques. Perhaps you will choose to visit one of the famous wine cellars or to take a wine course today. Overnight Chablis area.

  • Day 2

    Burgundy Wine & Culture Tour, Day 2: Chablis-Fontenay Abbey-Dijon

    After a delicious breakfast, depart for the remarkable Fontenay Abbey, just a few kilometers south of Chablis. Founded in the 12th century by St. Bernard, this Cistercian abbey has a remarkable history and beautiful gardens waiting for you to explore. Continue on to Dijon, which marks the beginning of the “Route des Grand Crus.”

    Known as “the City with a Hundred Bell Towers”, Dijon boasts a long religious heritage as evidenced by its numerous towers, steeples and belfries. Visit the beautiful 11th century Sainte-Bénigne cathedral or take the time to walk up the Jean-le-Bon tower for its breathtaking views of the Dijon skyline.

    Wander the historical town center, taking the time to admire its half-timbered houses. A must see is the Palais des Ducs et des Etats de Bourgogne in the Parliament District. This former palace houses one of France’s major art museums, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which displays outstanding examples of medieval objects, Renaissance furniture and paintings by such notable artists as Géricault, Courbet, Manet and Monet.

    Perhaps you will sample some of the city’s famous mustard or partake in a traditional meal before continuing on to Beaune, which will be your base for touring over the next few days. Overnight Beaune.

  • Day 3

    Burgundy Wine & Culture Tour, Day 3: Route des Grands Crus and Beaune

    Welcome to the Route des Grands Crus! Today you begin your tour of the magical “Route des Grand Crus”, which runs along the Cote d’Or from Dijon to Santenay. Visit and explore the charming villages of the Cote de Nuits, the northern portion of the Cote d’Or. Admire the geranium-adorned stone houses and clusters of vineyards.

    A cornucopia of the greatest wine appellations welcome you: Gevrey-Chambertin, where you can take a tour around the medieval castle and partake in a wine tasting in its old cellar; Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot, where you can enjoy a guided tour and tasting at the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot. Continue on to Vosne-Romanée, where you can savor the Grand Crus Romanée-Conti, la Grande Rue, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and La Tache. Not to be missed is Nuits-Saint-Georges with its wine and blackcurrants. Return this evening to picturesque Beaune with its bustling cobblestone streets and storybook Flemish-Gothic architecture.   • Day 4

    Burgundy Wine & Culture Tour, Day 4: Beaune Wine Caves

    Today is a great day to explore Beaune! If it’s Market Day, meander through the market, tasting and admiring the cheese, olives, pâté, fruit and vegetables. Explore the 15th century Hospices de Beaune and Hotel Dieu, with its stunning hand painted tile roof. This was once a hospital caring for the poor and sick of the area and is well worth a tour. Little bits of history are everywhere are you wander this village with its ramparts and quaint shops. Sample many of the region’s famous wines at Marché aux Vins opposite the Hospices.

    Stop in at one of the caves such as Bouchard Ainé & Fils or Patriarche Pere & Fils for a tasting or ask us to arrange for a tasting class this evening at an authentic off-the beaten-path cave in town. Enjoy dinner at one of the fine restaurants in Beaune tonight. Overnight Beaune.

  • Day 5

    Burgundy Wine & Culture Tour, Day 5: Cote de Beaune

    Enjoy a delicious breakfast before beginning your exploration of the Cote de Beaune, the southern portion of the Cote d’Or. This is where the grapes for the legendary dry white wines can be found growing alongside the celebrated reds of the region. Explore the wine village of Aloxe-Corton and its distinctive chateau with its tile-patterned roof. The Montagne de Corton (with the snow white Notre-Dame de Bonne Espérance statute reigning on top of it) offers a breathtaking view of the vines that produce some of the world’s most outstanding wines.

    Continue on to Pernard-Vergelesses and Pommard. Visit Chateau de Pommard for a tasting and become acquainted with the region’s grands crus. The villages of Volnanay, Meursault, Savigny-lés-Beaune and Puligny-Montrachet open their doors to welcome you as well today. For those who fancy more active pursuits, we can arrange for you to ride bicycles through the vines along the wine trail, stopping along the way for exploration, tastings and adventure!   • Day 6

    Day 6: Depart for Home and Beyond

    Bid adieu to Beaune this morning. Perhaps you will continue on to the Champagne region or to Lyon in the south.
